Rising Star of Dusk
Much of the music creation landscape has come to be dominated by “the grid” – the way our digital audio workstations divide each bar into absolutely equal beats and ticks. While this makes it easier to work with midi, with loops, and frees us from having to get an entire orchestra together in one room to record all at once, it does squash one of the affective tools that musicians have in their arsenal – rubato (the pulling and pushing of the tempo to create dramatic musical gestures).
Writing this EP was my way of rebelling against the perfect grid, as it was recorded complete free of prescribed tempos and without any re-takes or comping. It was played as it would be in a live performance, and it was a joy to do.
Annemi Phillips played the viola part, I played the synthy parts.
